Profile: Tashreeq Vardien

Tashreeq Vardien, a young man from New Fields in Westen Cape, has been fan of skateboarding ever since he was 7 years old. He even watches skateboard movies and always makes his way to the park just to watch other kids in his neighborhood do their thing. The only problem is that he does not know how to skate. He has tried several times to join some of his friends on the ramp, but he always fails to do the stunts. Apart from this, he is music lover and he spends most of his time listening to Lupe Fiasco, Jay Z and Pharrel Williams, among others
Growing up in New Fields was never a walk in the park. At times he had to stay indoors just to escape gangsters and drug users on the streets. The last eleven years he has spent there were a blessing in disguise. He has been able to make good friends from his primary school, who have become significant even today as he spearheads into adult life. He considers his high school days to be the best. He got to play one of his favorite sports, soccer, and he was the captain of his rugby team at Alexander Centre High School in 2008.
“My greatest fear in life is to lose my teeth,” he says, as we chat outside his classroom at Cape Peninsula University of Technology, where he is studying towards a BTECH in Journalism. His goal is to attain his degree and possibly proceed to a masters and doctorate one day.
