This could be one ‘movie’ I could have starred in, just to chuck in a little flavour on my part. Maybe some of you have actually watched it, but only to ponderous chagrin as you realised it was totally a waste of funds and unorthodox flair that these two main characters (Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher) have managed to retain over the years. My version is much better. It doesn’t carry much of the ostentatious scenes that this movie is blemished with. It’s much closer to home, and I feel a faint palpitation clasp the marrow of my spine.
It all seemed like a movie alright, but this wasn’t anything close to multitude ‘takes’ and ‘rehearsals’ that movie directors and producers go through.
Firstly, if you thought nightlife in Cape Town, or South Africa in general, is dead, then think twice. It’s always like people hibernate throughout the day; suddenly pouncing into action with a substantial amount of dexterity come sundown.
My version of Vegas would be Long Street in Cape Town of course (...and trust me I got a timid grin plastered on my face when mentioning the place). Not because of the superbly lit streets and hoards of people swarming the clubs and restaurants like vultures pulling in on a wildebeest carcass. It’s because what happens there might need not to be documented, for whatever reason you might have, yet an omnibus (in whatever form), can always come in handy, so that you can retire at some point, just to steal a look through the events of that day.
To be honest, I have been so lucky in so many instances in my life. I have survived so many nerve-jangling mishaps than I can remember, but what I witnessed there yesterday surpasses my fathoming abilities. If you have never visited Long Street on weekend, or any other day of the week, because at times it’s a bit hard to discriminate between a weekend and any other day of the week in Long Street, take some time off and pay it a visit. Put on something ‘light’, and not too warm, because you might find yourself ‘dancing the night away’ in one of the many ‘joints’ that are there. It’s like a small ‘capital’ that never sleeps. Like a Noctiluca that never dies; forever glowing throw the night till the break of dawn.
You might find this mindboggling, but have you ever witnessed a car accident that clears itself out, without a trace of what happened? Might sound implausible, but I saw a guy driving a Toyota Yaris (couldn’t make out most of the details on the car), which hit the metal barriers on the road (that divide the carriage ways), flipped the car, which then rolled once or twice I think, only to land back on its wheels although it was already in a rubble. Whoever it was, he certainly didn’t leave unscathed. The miracle in all this, though, is that he didn’t STOP driving!
Needless to say my efforts to try and turn this whole spontaneous feat into a video clip came to a halt because of bad lighting, and we could not keep up with him as he was already back to the speeding game, seconds after he escaped DEATH by a whisker. I will never be able to illustrate the facial expressions on my friends’ faces; which were topped off with a dropped lower jaw that hung there in disbelief, eyes almost leaping out of their sockets. It was like watching a movie, in which only the five of us where cordially invited to its premiere.
Even today I still wonder if what I witnessed actually transpired or we were all bewitched for a few seconds, and set in a trance that was just too real to be a dream. All I can ask myself is why couldn’t he stop? Why would he continue to drive, hurt and probably bleeding from the mess, and not stop at least to see if nothing wrong had happened to the rest of the world. Maybe I forgot to mention that when he started racing away from the scene, he was already on the opposing carriageway, which was even a worse situation than the one he had survived, given oncoming traffic could easily plunged right into him.
Well, I guess he also had the chance to watch the movie What Happens in Vegas in his lifetime. Unfortunately for him it wasn’t anything to do with a $3 million jackpot at some casino Las Vegas. Only us, who had the opportunity to witness this overwhelming incident, know how lucky he is to be alive, if he is alive, wherever he is right now. You don’t get that much luck on silver platter you know, and surely you never get to skim off scot-free from an accident scene every day. Surely his God is with him.
Never to be repeated, I can say. Never to be showcased again. I surely hope it stays in Vegas (for the sake of everybody in the world). Till next time folks....stay safe and please, do take it easy on the bottle. Peace.
