At times when faced with days like this, I tend to run out of words, ideas, thoughts, let alone the energy to engage into fruitful dialogue with anyone or tackle any given subject that deserves scrutiny. This particular issue, though, simply stands out, because of its relevance, and its repercussions and aftermath if overlooked.
What I feel is something that might be felt by many all over the world, but for those who have pioneered for such a catastrophe, I feel nothing more than remorse that transforms into a bit of shame when I think of all those who have worked so tirelessly and hard to pave way for freedom and democracy throughout South Africa and the rest of Africa, whose attempts will go down the drain as futile energy channeled to emancipate unappreciative recipients.
If we were to be taken down memory lane some of you would dredge up the stories of how our fore fathers fought to gain freedom; our freedom, if you would like to put it. Little did we know that a decade or two later, we would be fighting for that freedom yet again.
The difference today though, is, the fight is no longer one that seeks to break the harsh chains of slavery or colonialism, or the long oppressive hand of apartheid, but rather it is a fight against those that we believed were guarding jealously the true essence of what our forefathers fought for. Those we believed would stand before the world and testify that their fight is not a personal one, but one that represents all the children of the soil.
Today millions of people around Africa and the World witnessed a process that will change the country known as South Africa, although just for now we hope. What a minority claim is only a measure to protect government officials, the majority see it as an unadulterated excuse to veil transgressions and irregularities that government officials may find themselves embroiled in. According to The Christian Science Monitor, the ruling African National Congress has hailed the bill as a necessary measure to protect South Africa's national security information from foreign spies. We simply hope that is the only thing they are trying to ‘protect’.
Like I said, I don’t have much to say, but just these few heart-felt words. I believe the fight is not over yet. The journey into the real battle is just beginning. Like they always say, this is the tip of the iceberg. What we see is only a minute percentage of what really lays beneath. Time will certainly tell.
