Ever pictured yourself scribbling on a tiny piece of old paper or cloth, with that hoary feather pen which came as a gift from a long-lost friend? After that you had to hunt for the best pigeon around, which is acclaimed for its flight abilities, and being able to cover vast distances to reach the other side. Then you would have to fold your letter into a tad folding and stick it onto its leg, before you set it off into the unknown, with the hope that in a couple of days it reaches the intended recipient?
Those were the days, I suppose, when man had to rely on what was available, before the birth of the mechanical world where everything is now done electronically, wirelessly or via some other intricate cabling system that not even yourself understands. What we, as human beings have gone through, is a leap greater than many leaps men have accomplished. Gone are the days where one had to walk for days just to tell an ally that the king or queen is not well. Think of the horsemen; who rode for days and many nights in the wild, until the horse itself could run no more; with every inch of its body drained and torn, after galloping miles and miles over vast expanse of rugged terrains.
Well, I have to admit, life has become so enjoyable since the birth of this sophisticated era, more so, the birth of social networks. As I continue to stroke these keys on the keyboard, I can’t help but smile at the thought of how far human beings have come. We have defied all odds indeed. Taken every stride into the dark, but found our way into the light at the very far end, victorious again. Technology has cut almost all barriers in life and has brought the world so close to each other it’s as if we can hold each other’s hands, yet geographical distance stands in the way like a soldier on guard.
Social networks; the number one culprit that has annexed almost every household with ease and has transformed everybody’s lives immensely. These days we chat, we text, we tweet, and ‘update our status’, sharing some of the most subtle or immoral deeds that we get up to on a daily basis. I look at the transformation that has occurred over the past five, six years or so, and think of how much progress and development people have gone through in general. Even our parents now know how to infiltrate these social network stratums, and find themselves “face booking”, “tweeting” or even worse, “mxiting”; things they never knew of in their heydays.
I have to say, social networks have changed our lives. At times it feels like it’s just too much, but just a few hours away from these ‘chatting grounds’, you feel lost. It becomes a gap that not even food can fill. It’s as if you have done injustice to yourself, and others who might have looked forward to having you around during those long hours on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, BBM, Mxit or even WhatsApp! Let’s embrace these awesome moments with these virtual guardians of ours, who have introduced us to so many friends all over the four corners of world. But, as human beings we are forever inventing, developing and advancing in every field, who knows what will come after all this, but in the meantime, let' enjoy it while we still can!
